Background of the study
Flooding has emerged as a recurrent environmental hazard that affects various communities globally, with Sagamu Local Government Area experiencing increasingly frequent flood events due to changing rainfall patterns and urban expansion (Adebanjo, 2023). The interplay between natural hydrological cycles and human interventions has led to significant socio-economic challenges in the area. The disruption of livelihoods, destruction of property, and interruption of economic activities are central concerns that have necessitated an in-depth investigation (Olusegun, 2024). Flooding not only damages infrastructure but also exacerbates poverty levels, creating a cycle of vulnerability among the residents. Local communities often struggle with inadequate planning and poor emergency response systems, which further intensify the impacts of flood disasters. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of integrating community-based management strategies and modern technology to predict and mitigate flood risks (Babatunde, 2025). These studies suggest that better preparedness and timely interventions could significantly reduce economic losses. Moreover, environmental degradation and climate change contribute to the intensity and frequency of floods, making it imperative for stakeholders to re-evaluate existing policies and practices in flood management (Adeniyi, 2023). This research intends to examine these socio-economic implications to develop a sustainable framework for flood mitigation in Sagamu.
Statement of the problem
Sagamu faces recurrent flood events that have disrupted the socio-economic fabric of the community. The rising incidence of flooding has led to property damage, loss of income, and deteriorating public infrastructure. Current flood management strategies appear insufficient and poorly coordinated, exacerbating economic vulnerabilities. The community’s limited resources further hinder effective recovery and resilience, thereby impeding sustainable development. Recent observations indicate that existing policies lack the dynamism required to address emerging climatic challenges (Olajide, 2024).
